VIRIDIAN NUTRITION Horseradish and Garlic product description

Horseradish and garlic extracts with buffered vitamin C and zinc. Vitamin C plays an essential role in numerous areas of human health. Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of bones, cartilage, skin, gums and teeth. Vitamin C also enhances iron absorption and the normal energy-yielding metabolism. Vitamin C aids in the maintenance of the immune system including during and after intense physical exercise. Vitamin C contributes to normal psychological function, the functioning of the nervous system and contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. This 'oxidative stress' appears to be a major factor in many human diseases.Zinc is a mineral essential to many body processes including the maintenance of normal cognitive function, vision, fertility and reproduction, hair, skin and nails and the immune system. The garlic extract in this supplement is standardised to 4.5% alliin.

Viridian Nutrition Horseradish and Garlic Complex

Horseradish (Armotacia Rusticana) and Garlic (Allium Sativum) were used as natural remedies for infections centuries before it was discovered that they are a rich source of compounds with wide spectrum antibacterial and antiviral activity. Historically, horseradish was used during medieval times for coughs and colds.i During the 19th century the famous chemist and microbiologist Louis Pasteur recognized the antibiotic properties of garlic and used it to treat infectious illness.ii Garlic has demonstrated broad anti-bacterial activity, in particular against infectious bacteria such as Candida albicans, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Similarly, evidence suggests that horseradish may have activity against Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Staphylococcus aureus.4 Horseradish has also been used to treat chronic bacterial infections. An advantage of natural antibiotics is that they contain a wide spectrum of natural antimicrobial substances, and therefore appear to have no chance of bacterial resistance.

Several natural compounds from plants have been shown to have anti-viral activity and often have synergistic or complementary actions. The anti-viral actions of plant compounds include antioxidant activities, inhibiting virus production, inhibition of viral entry, and inhibiting viral reproduction. Garlic for example has been shown to have anti-viral activity against herpes simplex virus, influenza virus and human rhinovirus. Garlic may work in part by improving immunity, with evidence to suggest it may enhance immune system activity and improve resistance to infection.

What is HORSERADISH?

Viridian Nutrition Horseradish is a pungent root with a long traditional history of use as a food and medicine. Horseradish is reputed to eliminate excessive catarrh from the respiratory tract and anecdotal evidence suggests that horseradish has a mild decongestant effect. The strong sulfur-containing chemicals in horseradish are thought to thin mucus. It is typically used alongside garlic to support its decongestant activity.

Human clinical studies indicate that Horseradish is an effective treatment for infections.

Treatment with a herbal formulation containing horseradish has been shown to be comparable to antibiotics for acute sinusitis, acute bronchitis and acute urinary tract infection. Another study found a reduction in rates of upper respiratory infections by approximately 50% compared to placebo.

What is GARLIC good for?

a number of investigations have explored the use of garlic for upper respiratory infections. In one such study 146 people took a garlic supplement (standardised to the antibacterial compound allicin) over a 12-week period between November and February. Garlic significantly reduced the number of colds (24 vs 65) and the duration of symptoms (5.01 vs 1.52 days) and also reduced number of days with a confirmed viral infection (111 vs 366).

A study in 120 healthy subjects examined the effect of a garlic supplement on immune cell proliferation, cold and flu symptoms. Compared to placebo, garlic increased the production of immune cells (T cell and NK cells) and reduced the number of symptoms reported (21% fewer), number of days with a cold (61% fewer) and incidence of colds (58% fewer). 172 children aged 7-16 years who were treated with garlic or placebo the incidence of acute respiratory viral infections was reduced 2-4-fold in those who took garlic. Furthermore garlic improved general ratings of health and was well tolerated with no side effects.

What is Zinc good for?

Viridian Nutrition ZINC was shown in a large review of 15 clinical studies totaling over 1300 people to significantly reduce both symptoms and severity of the common cold. Taking zinc within 24 hours of the start of symptoms was found to cut the risk of still having symptoms at day 7 of a cold by about half. Zinc has also been shown to support your immune system and may be directly antiviral.

What is Vitamin C good for?

Viridian Nutrition VITAMIN C an analysis of 31 clinical studies of vitamin C for prevention and treatment of the common cold found that supplementation with vitamin C has a modest but consistent effect in reducing the duration of common cold symptoms.20 The analysis also examined 5 clinical studies in which people who were exposed to extreme physical stress (including marathon runners and skiers) were given vitamin C and in these individuals vitamin decreased the risk of the common cold by about 50%. The combined use of Vitamin C and Zinc has also been investigated. Two clinical studies in people with the common cold found that a combination of 1000 mg vitamin C plus 10 mg zinc reduced rhinorrhoea (runny nose) duration by 9-27% and was significantly more efficient than placebo at reducing rhinorrhoea over 5 days of treatment.
