Viridian’s Soil-Association certified, wild harvested Kelp (‘knotted wrack’ or ‘whistle wrack’) is sourced from the pristine Norwegian waters surrounding the famous Lofoten Islands. This high quality brown seaweed (genus Phaeophyta) is harvested above the Arctic Circle, i.e. where the Midnight Sun offers unique light conditions during the short summer season - a host of complex compounds such as vitamins and carotenoids are synthesised - before harvesting at the most nutritious point in the growth cycle.

No dyes or other additives are used and nothing is taken away in the production process of the seaweed meal, which provides a 100% natural product in the true sense.
The harvesting is carried out by paddlewheel driven harvesters, and is cut (not dredged) above the seabed, and only the fresh kelp plants floating up to surface are picked up. This method is environmentally sustainable and ensures that only fresh seaweed free from contamination is used as raw material in the product.

What does Kelp do?

  • WEIGHT CONTROL kelp is a rich source of oceanic nutrients, many of which can be lacking in modern diets and hence cause cravings and appetite dysregulation. Through improved nutritional status and the beneficial effects of iodine rich kelp on thyroid function, healthy weight can be achieved.

  • HYPOTHYROIDISM Seaweeds draw from the sea an incomparable wealth of macro-elements and trace elements. The mineral fraction of some seaweeds accounts for up to 36% of dry matter. The brown seaweeds have traditionally been used for treating thyroid goitre (hypothyroidism).

  • DETOXIFICATION Alginic acid, a complex polysaccharide found in Ascophyllum, passes through the body undigested, attracts and binds heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury (e.g. from amalgam fillings), and radioactive substances such as Strontium 90. Due to the alkalinity of seaweed, it can help to balance out the typically hyper-acidic Western diet.

  • CARDIOVASCULAR SUPPORT the fucose rich polysaccharides in brown seaweed have been shown to exert anticoagulant and anti-thrombotic effects and enhance the clearance of fatty substances e.g. cholesterol from blood vessels. In addition, seaweed is rich in heart protecting nutrients such as potassium, magnesium and calcium.

  • IMMUNE FUNCTION Research at the Norwegian University of Technology has shown the immune enhancing properties of Ascophyllum. Alginic acid appears to stimulate the body’s immune system and has been shown to inhibit certain bacterial infections by aiding the production of a special type of white blood cell, known as the monocyte. Fucoidan, a polysaccharide fraction, has been shown to be effective in slowing or stopping growth of tumour cells and has also been found to inhibit chemical carcinogenesis. The antioxidant protection offered by the carotenoids present in seaweed along with the wide range of nutrients and complex polysaccharides are likely to exert synergistic effects in maintaining cellular integrity. Seaweed exerts anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti- fungal effects.
