What does the Viridian 65+ Multi do?

65+ Multi

Specifically formulated to support the nutritional status in the over 65s, with added digestive factors to enhance optimal nutrient uptake.

One major concern in the elderly is poor digestion. This formula includes a wide range of digestive aids and absorption-enhancing elements.

Many people over the age 65 are already taking prescribed medications for a variety of health conditions and many are concerned that their prescribed drugs may contraindicate with their food supplements. This formula has been cross-checked against the common medications to ensure safety.

Important nutrients at levels which have been double-checked not to contraindicate with common medications.

One of the major issues as we get older, is a depletion of vitamin B12. This is because over the years, our levels of stomach acid begin to decline. Stomach acid produces a compound called ‘intrinsic factor’ which is a glycoprotein responsible for the active absorption of vitamin B12. As vitamin B12 enters the stomach, it forms a complex with a glycoprotein. This complex then leaves the stomach, and gets absorbed as it enters the intestine. This whole process is reliant upon the presence of sufficient stomach acid.

The vitamin C

in this formula is buffered to prevent acid rejection and enhance absorption. The addition of bioflavonoids enhances vitamin C absorption. The two compounds always occur as a complex in nature within foods that are notorious sources of vitamin C.

Vitamin D

is the most deficient nutrient in the UK, and one of the single most important nutrients in the body. Not really a vitamin, more of a hormone, vitamin D is essential for the function of 1 in 7 of the genes in the entire Human genome. It is involved in everything from bone density to regulating certain functions within the nervous system. Vitamin D has now also been shown to be fundamental for normal cellular growth and division. As most vitamin D is produced in the skin upon contact with sunlight, depletion of this nutrient is rife in the UK, especially amongst older people who perhaps do not get out very much during the winter.

Key minerals in immunity and antioxidant protection.

Coenzyme Q10, also known as ubiquinone, is a naturally occurring substance and an essential component of the mitochondria – the energy producing unit within our cells. CoQ10 is involved in the production of ATP, the energy molecule. The benefits of CoQ10 centre around energy production and for its benefits as an antioxidant. CoQ10s antioxidant effects reduce lipid peroxidation and assist vitamin E in protecting cell membranes and lipids such as cholesterol from oxidation.

Alpha lipoic (ALA) acid is a sulphur-containing vitamin-like substance playing key roles in the production of ATP and acts uniquely as a potent antioxidant in protecting against both fat and water soluble free radicals. It also extends and enhances the effect of other antioxidants, which are used to defend the body against free radical damage.

Alpha lipoic acid has been shown to prevent oxidative stress in neuronal (nerve) tissue. Lipoic acid helps maintain glutathione levels which are found to be depleted in conditions such as Parkinson’s disease.

Examination of current research reveals protective effects of lipoic acid in cerebral ischemia-reperfusion, excitotoxic amino acid brain injury, mitochondrial dysfunction, blood sugar level control, inborn errors of metabolism, and other causes of acute or chronic damage to brain or neural tissue.

ALA is a potent antioxidant and is used to regenerate glutathione. It offers particular benefits in skin health through preventing glycation (the free radical damage caused by sugar’s toxic effects) causing collagen ‘crosslinking’.

Is there digestive enzymes in the 65+ Multi?

The formula contains a digestive enzyme blend to aid digestive function, and to further enhance absorption of nutrients. Notable amounts of Betaine HCL is found within this formula, which aids the stomach in producing required levels of hydrochloric acid. This will enable the body to produce more intrinsic factor, which will aid in correct absorption and utilisation of vitamin B12.

Amylase - carbohydrate digestion, Lipase - fat digestion, lactase - milk/lactose digestion, protease - protein digestion, amyloglucosidase - starch digestion.

Bioperine is an extract of black pepper which has undergone some very in depth clinical testing in the USA, and has been shown to significantly improve bioavailability of nutrients when taken at the same time. We have included bioperine to enhance uptake of nutrients.
