Digestive Health

Betaine HCl with Gentian, Betaine Hydrochloride is a commonly used digestive aid, specifically for low stomach acid. When taken in a capsule, betaine HCl acidifies gastric fluid by dissociating into free betaine and hydrochloric acid, thus lowering gastric pH (increasing gastric acidity). Gentian (Gentiana lutea), a yellow flowering plant commonly found in the mountain regions of central and south Europe, is a digestive bitter. Gentian has been shown directly stimulate acid production via the gastric mucosa. Thus betaine HCl and Gentian would be considered a logical combination for increasing stomach acid and improving digestive health.

Bromelain, Pineapple has been used as a medicinal plant in several native cultures and bromelain has been known chemically since 1876. In 1957, bromelain was introduced as a therapeutic compound and is a sulphur- containing proteolytic enzyme meaning it is capable of digesting protein.

Eye Health

Beta Carotene Mixed Carotenoids, Lutein Plus: (Lutein, zeaxanthin): The carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, found in brightly coloured vegetables, help protect the visual centre (the macule) of the eye from free radical damage and can reduce our risk for developing macular degeneration. A study published in the  Journal of the American Medical Association found that individuals who consumed the highest amount of lutein- and zeaxanthin-rich vegetables had a 43% reduced risk of developing macular degeneration compared with those who ate the lowest amount. Lutein in the lens acts as nature's own sunglasses. Lutein and a related carotene zeaxanthin, produced by the body from lutein, absorb blue light, the most dangerous type of light for theeyes. The cornea (a clear shield spanning the outer eyes) and lens filter out much ultraviolet light; yet, visible blue light still reaches the retina. Lutein in the macula helps protect your eyes from photochemical damage from ultraviolet, high-energy visible light. Numerous studies have now confirmed these initial findings, and doctors are recommending a regular intake of antioxidant nutrients including these important carotenoids. To ensure you're getting adequate lutein and other carotenes, eat at least five servings of brightly coloured vegetables each day (dark green, red and orange). If you choose to supplement your diet with these nutrients, select a product containing a mixture of different carotenes to maintain a balance in your body. Researchers from Boston's Harvard Medical School studied the eating habits of 50,000 nurses for eight years. Subjects who ate more carotene-rich foods were less likely to develop cataracts.

Bilberry & Eyebright: (Vaccinium myrtillus): By improving the circulation to the eye, strengthening the eye tissue and increasing oxygen and energy levels in the eye tissue Bilberry offers major benefits in the prevention and treatment of many eye disorders. Bilberry has a long-standing reputation as an herb for the eyes. Legend has it that in World War II, British Royal Air Force pilots who spread bilberry jam on their bread saw better during night missions. Science confirms that bilberries contain a high amount of anthocyanidins and may ward off cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Eyebright was used by ancient Greeks to treat eye infections. The name euphrasia is derived from the Greek euphrosyne, which means "gladness." It's believed the name was given to the plant because eyebright induced happiness by facilitating sight. Eyebright contains tannins, iridoid glycosides, the flavonoids quercetin and rutin, vitamin C, essential fatty acids, the glycoside aucuboside, caffeic and ferulic acids, sterols, choline, some basic compounds, and a volatile oil. There are few studies showing the efficacy of Eyebright, but many traditional herbalists are passionate about its use in eye health.

GTF Chromium: According to a study in the Journal of the International Academy of Preventive Medicine, chromium deficiency is strongly tied to the development and progression of near sightedness. Chromium is needed for the proper function of the ciliary muscles, the muscles that help the eyes focus. If there isn't enough chromium in our bloodstream, say the researchers, then sustained eye focusing can't be maintained. Refined carbohydrates, such as white flour, white rice and sugar are very low in chromium, eating a diet composedprimarilyofthesefoodscancauseachromiumdeficiencyovertime. Along with chromium, it's important to eat foods rich in folic acid and vitamin C as both of these nutrients work with chromium to promote proper function of the ciliary muscles.

Lutein Plus, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Ester C, Organic Acerola Vit-C, Balanced Zinc: Free radical damage is the major contributing factor in the development of degenerative eye disorders. An antioxidant formula containing vitamins A, C, E, zinc and selenium would help in neutralising the harmful effects of free radicals. Research indicates that adding vitamin C supplements to what you eat helps control or even prevent eye conditions by decreasing pressure in the eyes (Annals of Ophthalmology). Also, the Eye Disease Case-Control Study Group found a link between insufficient vitamin C intake and macular degeneration (Journal of the American Medical Association). In addition, cataract risk has been reported to be 45 percent lower among women who use vitamin C supplements for 10 years or more (British Medical Journal). Researchers at Louisiana

State University revealed the clinical relevance of zinc when they gave 151 subjects with macular degeneration either zinc pills or a placebo. Those who took zinc had significantly less visual loss after one to two years of treatment than the group on the placebo.

Pycnogenol & Grape Seed Extract: Anthocyanidins are the flavonoids that give produce their summer shades of red, blue and purple. Like carotenes, anthocyanidins are antioxidants instrumental in deactivating eye-harming free radical molecules. However, anthocyanidins have the added benefit of reinforcing blood vessels, thus improving blood flow and the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to the eyes, thereby bolstering overall eye strength. Anthocyanidins are found in high levels in pine bark extract (Pycnogenol) and

Researchers from Heber City, Utah reported that vitamin C decreased cold and flu symptoms reported by 85% of subjects. In another study, H Gorton DC and K Jarvis DC compared the effects of pain relievers and decongestants among 463 subjects in a control group and vitamin C in 252 subjects in the test group. The test group took 1,000mg of vitamin C hourly for the first six hours after initial symptoms and then 1,000mg three times daily. The results showed that 50% of subjects reporting flu symptoms experienced relief with one six-hour treatment of 1,000mg of vitamin C per hour. A form of vitamin C has been developed and patented in the USA that has proven particularly effective. Ester-C is a buffered form of vitamin C that reduces the acidity and is especially gentle on the stomach. This enables the user to take higher levels without gastrointestinal discomfort.

Oregon Grape Root: This herb has a high content of the alkaloids, berberine, hydrastine and canadine, which have strong antibiotic activity against a wide variety of harmful organisms including staphylococcus, streptococcus, chlamydia, salmonella and candida. Berberine’s action against some of these pathogens is actually stronger than that of antibiotics commonly used for these foreign invaders. Berberine’s action in inhibiting candida, as well as pathogenic bacteria, prevents the spreading of a yeast that is a common side effect of antibiotic use. Oregon Grape also aids in boosting the blood supply to the spleen, enabling the spleen to release immune-boosting compounds most effectively. Berberine also activates macrophages, the cells that engulf and destroy bacteria, viruses, and other undesirable matter. This effect on the blood supply classes berberine containing plants as ‘blood purifiers’. Berberine containing plants are suitable in lowering fevers, as they appear to enhance the immune system’s ability to handle fever-producing compounds produced by microorganisms.

Organic Rhodiola Rosea, An adaptogenic herb is one that helps the body adapt to various stressors, whether they are physical, mental or environmental. Rhodiola is a superior plant and is generally regarded as harmless whilst exerting profound supportive effects. Given that we are basically a primitive organism struggling to adapt to a modern high technological environment, now more than ever adaptogens offer protection against the negative effects of stress. Depression is a consequence of insufficient serotonin levels in the body brought about by various stimuli. Active compounds found within Rhodiola (rosavinandsalidroside) improve the passage of serotonin precursors through the blood-brain barrier. Research has also shown rhodiola to help preserve serotonin by inhibiting the activity of COMT (catechol-omethyl transferase). Rhodiola can increase serotonin by 30% and decrease COMT by up to 60%, offering a natural way to achieve a more relaxed state.

Organic Valerian Root: Herbal remedies have been used safely for centuries for insomnia. In modern herbal medicine, the leading herb for insomnia is valerian. Valerian root makes getting to sleep easier and increases deep sleep and dreaming. Valerian does not cause a morning “hangover,” a side effect common to prescription sleep drugs in some people. A double-blind trial found that valerian extract(600mg30minutes before bedtime for 28 days) is comparable in efficacy to a commonly prescribed drug for insomnia. In a separate double-blind trial, the same amount of valerian extract was found to improve subjective assessments of sleep quality and certain aspects of brain function during sleep as well.

Pregnancy Support

Balanced Iron, Organic Liquid Iron: One of the most common complications of pregnancy is anaemia. Although inadequate maternal iron stores, unlike other nutrient deficiencies, don't directly harm the growing foetus, they can lead to a difficult labour. Decreased iron increases the mother's risk of pre-eclampsia (elevated blood pressure and oedema) and of death if haemorrhage occurs at delivery. The concern is real because iron deficiency is so prevalent. In fact, 20% of non-pregnant women are deficient, and this risk multiplies during pregnancy because iron needs double from 15 to 30mg/day.

High Potency Glucosamine: Commonly associated with benefit to arthritic joints, Glucosamine has a role to play in joint repair after injury. Joints are made of collagen and glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). Both substances continuously construct and reconstruct cartilage. Glucosamine is the major precursor of GAGs. Following cartilage trauma or tearing, the body often can't make enough glucosamine for optimal healing. In addition, the ability to convert glucose to glucosamine declines with age because of a reduction in the amount of the enzyme glucosamine synthetase. This is where oral glucosamine comes in. Taking glucosamine supplements can increase GAG levels significantly. Clinical trials have shown that glucosamine relieves the pain and inflammation of osteoarthritis. It also represents a safe alternative to non steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (e.g. ibuprofen), which have been shown to inhibit repair and accelerate destruction of cartilage.

Weight Management

Co enzyme Q10 with MCT: (medium chain triglycerides) Co-Q10 is a natural enzyme present in all of us, but levels can reduce with a hectic lifestyle, stress and aging, hence we may feel more tired and have lower energy. A deficiency could decrease thermogenesis (heat production) and energy production. Co-Q10 literally helps you ‘burn’ more calories within the cell’s mitochondria. Co-Q10 is also an antioxidant, essential in heart health. MCTs are pre-digested fats from coconut oil and help the body to transport and utilise the Co-Q10. MCTs stimulate the cell to produce ATP (Adenosine Tri-Phosphate, energy) and increase thermogenesis.

Complete Fibre Complex with FOS: Fibre is very effective at taking out excess fats in the body via the digestive tract, thereby preventing them from being shuttled to adipose tissues. Fibre is filling and satiating, a great way to feel full without having to take on board the calories. FOS (Fructooligosaccharides) feeds bacteria in the gut.

GTF Chromium: Chromium is a very important mineral that not only helps to reduce sugar cravings by regulating blood sugar levels, but also helps to reduce body fat and increase lean muscle tissues. A trace mineral complex with added chromium is another ideal way to take chromium too, as the other minerals will provide extra endurance in exercise and stamina if needed.

HCA Hydroxy Citric Acid (Garcinia cambogia): Research suggests that HCA may be a useful weight loss aid. HCA has been demonstrated to reduce the conversion of carbohydrates into stored fat by inhibiting certain enzyme processes. Research conducted on 90 obese subjects concluded that after 8 weeks, both body weight and body mass index (BMI) decreased by 5.4%, low-density lipoprotein and triglycerides levels were reduced by 12.9% and 6.9% respectively, while high-density lipoprotein levels increased by 8.9%, serotonin levels increased by 44.5% and urinary excretion of fat metabolites increased by 32-109%. No significant adverse effects were observed and the results confirm that HCA reduces body weight and BMI, suppresses appetite, improves blood lipid profiles, increases serum leptin and serotonin levels and increases fat oxidation more than placebo.

L-Carnitine: Energy, endurance and stamina. Carnitine is very important for fat metabolism, especially in heart and muscle cells. Carnitine helps move fat that sits outside the cells into the cell’s mitochondria for burning into energy.

Organic Green Tea: Green tea has been found to have a thermogenic effect. Thermogenesis may contribute to an increased metabolism that results in improved body composition.
